Can I use a regular lunge line?

I do some natural horsemanship groundwork with the horses I ride, and I borrow my trainer's natural horsemanship rope, which to me just seems like a shorter lunge line with leather poppers at the end. Can I just get a regular round lunge line and have it do the same thing? The NH ropes are just SO expensive!
