How does bacteria respond to rapid exposure to extreme changes in temperature?

Bacteria is an extremely broad term for microorganisms that are prevalent on the earth. Typically, for most household bacteria, boiling something will completely kill the organism. Freezing tends to simply put the organism into a coma like state (depending on the bacteria, that is). Switching between hot and cold would be extremely volatile for most bacteria (and most sensitive animals, as well).
